Miniatures with woven ornaments were widespread in Kyivan Rus'. These complex drawings combined several symbols at once, presenting a complex artistic image. The cross with the image of the Resurrection of Jesus is very similar in concept to the Old Russian miniatures. The border of the cross consists of four intersecting quadrilaterals with slightly rounded corners, slightly resembling a quatrefoil.
This weaving became widespread in the fourteenth century as part of the image on the pectoral cross. The intersecting triangles are a symbol of the glory of Jesus. Sometimes they form a halo. This ornament in combination with the crucifix can mean the embodiment of the image of the Savior, Divine and the created gathered together. This image is clearly visible on the icon "Descent into Hell".
The scriptures do not mention that Jesus ever descended into Hell. However, there is a legend that God visited Hell to free the righteous and take away Adam and Eve, who were languishing in Hell for their sins.
Adam and Eve are depicted on the right side. Jesus holds Adam's hand. The icon also has images of those who preceded the Savior, for example, John the Baptist, the greatest prophet of Christ, as well as King David. People who languish in the dungeons of Hell are in caves. The broad vertical emphasizes the Greatness of Jesus.
According to tradition, equal-armed crosses have become the most widespread. The four equal sides into which the cross extends symbolize the universe. The cross itself is the harmony in it, the point of contact and connection of all that is Divine and Worldly.
The upper beam on the cross represents Heaven. It is much larger than the others on this product. This means that the Earth and the Heavens become one in Easter thanks to God. All four ends do not diverge in different directions but are united in the middle – in Christ. This is the most important holiday for the Orthodox Church.
Easter is the day when everyone praises God. This bright and joyful feeling is depicted in the ornament of this product. It conveys grace and love through symbols.
The complex ornament depicts the interweaving of all living things, people and their destinies, nations of the whole world, and the creation of all living things. Jesus is at the center of the composition, as is the cross – a symbol of greatness and salvation for all Christians.
