The cross is presented in a form that is not quite familiar to everyone, resembling an angel whose wings are about to rise to the heavens.
There are two of the most famous and venerated biblical images on the cross:
- The image of Jesus Christ – the son of the Lord.
- The image of the Archangel Michael – the most powerful and most important among the angels.
The image of Jesus Christ
He is depicted on every cross, because he became the savior for all, sacrificing his own life. Christ took upon himself the sins of the human race, redeemed the guilt for a sinful nation. The image of Christ is the strongest of all, because it was he who conquered death. "Christ is risen from the dead, giving death to the dead, and giving life to those who are in the grave!“
On the right and left sides of the savior there are the figures of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and the Apostle John. Mary and John followed Jesus while leading him to execution, and it was these two who endured with him all the sufferings of the death penalty. On the sides of the Crucified image of Christ, angels are depicted singing of grief over the great loss.
Above the head of the son of our Lord is the Throne of God - "Etymasia", on which the great judgment of sinners is to be performed. "And they will stand before the Lord who sits on the throne at the hour of Judgment!" And under the feet of the savior is the skull of Adam, buried on Mount Golgotha.
Image of the Archangel Michael
The Archangel Michael, or in another way he is called "Who as God?" – the most powerful of the angels, he is represented on the back side of the cross. In the biblical culture, the Archangel has always been seen as a savior-a warrior for good. After all, it is Michael who stabs the throat of a snake – this is a symbol of victory over the devil. The warriors sought to decorate their armor with the image of the great angel, in the hope that he would help them win the battles.
Above the Archangel is the figure of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, who raises her hands to heaven in prayer for all the earthly people. It is believed as long as the Mother of God continues her prayer to the Lord, people will be able to resist the pressure of dark forces, and the devil will not have power over them.
This cross is considered the strongest talisman from any troubles and misfortunes, as it is decorated with images of two powerful saviors. People believed that Jesus Christ and Michael would protect them from all bad things, and praying with this cross would help them find a way out of even a hopeless situation.
